Gemcitabine is an antimetabolite chemotherapy medicine that slows or stops the growth of cancer cells by interfering with DNA replication. Each vial contains 1g of gemcitabine (as gemcitabine hydrochloride) in powder form, to be reconstituted for intravenous infusion.

Indications of gemcitabine:

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • May also be used in other cancers as recommended by the oncologist.

Administration:

  • Supplied as a powder for solution that must be reconstituted with sterile saline.
  • Given by intravenous infusion (usually over 30 minutes) in a hospital setting.
  • The dosage is based on body surface area, type of cancer, and specific treatment regimen.
  • Typically administered in cycles, with rest periods between treatments.
Safety Information:
  • Contraindicated in patients with severe bone marrow suppression or known hypersensitivity to gemcitabine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, prior chemotherapy, or recent radiotherapy.
  • Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, rash, mild hair loss, flu-like symptoms.
  • Serious risks: bone marrow suppression (low blood counts), infections, bleeding, liver toxicity, kidney impairment, or lung complications (breathing difficulties).
  • Regular monitoring of blood counts, liver, and kidney function is required during treatment.
