Duphalac syrup contains lactulose, a synthetic, non-absorbable sugar that works by drawing water into the bowel, making stools softer and easier to pass.
It is commonly used for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults and children, including infants when recommended by a healthcare professional. Lactulose also has a prebiotic effect, encouraging the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.
In specialist care, it is used to help reduce blood ammonia levels in patients with hepatic encephalopathy.
Treatment may take 24–48 hours before noticeable improvement occurs.
