Indications of gemcitabine:
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
- Pancreatic cancer
- Breast cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Bladder cancer
- May be used in combination with other chemotherapy medicines depending on the treatment plan.
Administration:
- Supplied as a powder for solution to be dissolved in sterile saline.
- Administered by intravenous infusion (usually over 30 minutes) in a hospital or oncology unit.
- Dosage is determined by the patient’s body surface area, type of cancer, and treatment schedule.
- Typically given in treatment cycles with rest periods in between.
Safety Information:
- Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to gemcitabine or those with severe bone marrow suppression.
- Use with caution in patients with liver, kidney, or lung problems, or those who have had recent radiotherapy.
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, fever, flu-like symptoms, rash, fatigue, mild hair loss.
- Serious risks: low blood cell counts (anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia), increased infection risk, bleeding, liver toxicity, kidney impairment, and rare lung complications.
- Requires regular monitoring of blood counts, kidney, and liver function during treatment.
