Indications of hydroxyurea:
- Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
- Head and neck cancers (excluding lip cancer)
- Ovarian cancer
- Used in sickle cell disease to reduce the frequency of painful crises and need for blood transfusions

May be used in other blood and solid tumors as prescribed by the oncologist
How to take hydroxyurea:
- Taken orally in capsule form, usually once daily or as directed by a doctor.
- Dosage is based on body weight, response to treatment, and medical condition.
- Should be taken with water, and preferably at the same time each day.
- Patients with difficulty swallowing may open capsules carefully and mix with water (using gloves for safety).
Safety Information:
- Contraindicated in patients with severe bone marrow suppression or hypersensitivity to hydroxyurea.
- Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, mouth sores, darkened skin or nails.
- Serious risks: low blood counts (anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia), increased risk of infection, secondary cancers with long-term use, leg ulcers, and severe skin reactions.
- Requires regular blood monitoring to check blood counts and organ function.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use hydroxyurea, as it may harm the baby.
